By Cycling, June 16, 2010 12:11 am

Having the correct clothes on when cycling will make your cycling experience a better one.  If you have decided you are cycling long distance then it’s important you have on the right sort of padded shorts or trousers to make sure you don’t get uncomfortable.

When you’re going on a long ride and you have a hard saddle, making sure you are going to be comfortable is high on your list or priorities, not only do you want to have an enjoyable ride you want to prevent any injuries from occuring.  Choosing to wear lycra racing shorts, with padded lining will protect you from saddle sore.  You should always take the weather into consideration when riding.  This will also determine the type of cycle clothes you need. Here is a list of essential riding clothes when out riding.

On cold days cycling tights are a good idea.  Making sure the knees are kept coverered will stop you from feeling cold and make sure your performance stays high.  Having a base layer of clothing on is always a good thing to keep in mind, garments used for a base layer will absorb sweat from the body.  It’s always good to have a base layer of clothing, because having sweat build up is going to effect your performance, and a good base layer of clothing is going to soak up the sweat from your body.
When choosing a cycling top it should not be to baggy as this could slow you down especially if its a windy day, also to be considered is a cycling top should not be to tight as this will hinder you movements, to tight is as bad as too baggy. It’s important to keep arms coverered up on chilly days, if your arms feel cold on a ride it can really take the fun out of it.  Choosing the right clothes is of utmost importance to get the most comfort and enjoyment out of your cycling experience.  In the past cycling clothes were a lot harder to come by and were used by sports riders only.  Today it’s a lot easier to buy cycling clothes for reasonable prices.

Shoes
You want shoes that are stiff and fit into the peddles. Having shoes that are stiff will make sure you get the most energy from peddling as your feet will not bend around the peddles therefore breaking down the energy.  One point to remember when buying shoes for cycling is that your feet expand when they heat up so you shouldn’t but them to tight.  Allow for the feet to expand as they will do as you exercise with cycling. The shoes that are the most sought after are the one with the velcro fastening because they can be loosened with ease if shoes start to feel like they’re pinching.  Also they can be put on and taking off a lot easier.

Head Gear
It is best to always ride with a helmet. Without a helmet you are far more vulnerable.  It is a good idea to invest in a good quality helmet.  It should rest comfortably on your head and you shouldn’t be aware you’re wearing one. It should not move when you shake your head around and it also it should have good ventilation. There is plenty to choose from on the market today for cycling gear, don’t scrimp on your cycling clothes they are an important investment for your cycling experience.

What to Look for When you Go Shopping for Cycling Clothes

By Cycling, May 17, 2010 6:24 pm

There are two issues cycling clothes need to deal with: on the one hand the fabric they are made of needs to favor the rapid elimination of humidity and match warm and hot weather conditions, and on the other, they need to ensure a good protection against cold and wind. Since there is no big deal about choosing T-shirts, jerseys and shorts when riding the bike in the warm months of the year, we are going to tackle with the cold protection that is far more complex when it comes to cycling clothes. Like in the case of the apparel for winter sports, we can speak of layered protection.

The base layer, the one closest to the skin should be a thin long-sleeved fleece shirt that captures moisture and distributes it evenly, thus favoring rapid sweat elimination. Instead of a fleece – in case you favor cotton – there are other cycling clothes that can be used under other cold protection layers, and, the same long-sleeved t-shirts, could serve well in the warm season too, as they provide sun protection. For the mid-layer, fleece could also be a good choice in terms of materials, and special tops are usually the ones to get the attention when it comes to cycling clothes here.

Trousers and tights cannot be absent from the general apparel a biker needs, regardless of the season; you should definitely buy only tights that are especially cut for riding the bike. And there are two types of cycling clothes you need to consider here: on the one hand there are the lycra tights that stick close to the skin and on the other, there are bike trousers with a looser cut that are usually preferred by people with a more sensitive skin. In order to better cope with cold and wet days, you should wear some further protection over such trousers or tights and here we refer to goretex cycling clothes.

Warm, waterproof gloves and hats are also absolutely necessary for the biker’s protection. The hands and face are the most exposed to wind, cold air currents and even rain; therefore, when you go shopping for cycling clothes, don’t forget that a good fleece hood to wear under the helmet will prevent the cold from pinching your face and ears. The good part about such apparel items is that they are usually long enough to provide neck protection as well, this means that they will go well inside the jacket or jersey the biker is wearing.

The Advantages of Using Cycling Apparel Instead of General Sports Clothes

By Cycling, May 1, 2010 6:13 am

Regardless of the reasons one practices cycling for, there are certain elements all bikers need no matter their formation. This is the case with cycling apparel and the special gear necessary when going for long or short rides; on the one hand there are original brand names that issue great clothes for all types of weather, and on the other, you’ll find the cheap anonymous who deal in mass production. However, without quality cycling apparel for immediate skin contact, one may easily develop irritations or rashes; therefore, good clothes are not simply worn just to flatter the wearer, but to ensure a level of comfort and mobility.

Though the standard level of performance for any item of cycling apparel is that of professional bikers, any cyclist benefits from the quality of the materials and the uniqueness of the design. The advantage is that with especially created cycling apparel that remains close to the body, there is no movement hampering or any other inconvenience that appears frequently with other clothes that are not planned for cycling use. Though very often ignored, there is an important aspect related to the safety of the cycling apparel you choose; and the issue easily extends to other elements from the equipment.

Besides jackets that trap humidity inside, so that the skin remains wet all the time, there are many other cycling apparel items that when not chosen with a critical eye may represent a potential hazard. For instance, clothes that are not anatomically designed to fit your body, and hang loose on the back or the arms can easily get snagged on branches and cause accidents. Consequently, it is definitely not the case to cut corners when it comes to the quality of the cycling apparel, even if you simply use it at the weekend or every other week.

What are the advantages of using cycling apparel instead of general sports clothes that are designed for street wear? The big issue here is that cycling apparel is highly specialized and meets all the technical details required by this sport: contact points receive extra-care, not to mention that skin remains dry and cool all the time. The contact points with the bike: butt, hands, knees and feet are protected all the time by special pads and materials that absorb shocks or prevent perspiration from causing skin irritations. Therefore, when choosing cycling apparel in general it is good to check how well the health matters are taken into consideration.

Choosing A Cycling Jersey

By John Cooper, April 27, 2010 7:13 pm

When you choose a cycling jersey you have to choose a technical fabric which wicks moisture from the body so you remain comfortable on your ride.

What is a cycling jersey? It’s a specialized jersey for cycling. While the vast majority of cyclists worldwide wear conventional clothing while riding, a jersey offers certain advantages for the serious cyclist. A cycling jersey is cut long in the back to accommodate the bent-over position used in serious cycling.

Any pockets on the jersey are placed on the back panel as front pockets would tend to spill. The zipper, on a men’s jersey at least, is often made very long so that the cyclist can open up the jersey when he gets hot. The cycling jersey is usually worn with a tight fit in order to reduce air resistance. Jerseys are made from a material designed to wick moisture from the skin, keeping the cyclist cooler and more comfortable.

Being a mountain bike enthusiast, I decided to take my lightweight aluminium beauty and go for a ride. Nothing really serious, just 5 miles, to feel this new jersey and test the fabric. This has been my worst performance and probably one of my most valuable experiences.

The weather was cooperative, with a sunny and clear sky. I cruised at a comfortable speed. The roads were in fair condition, no hills, scenic routes and not much traffic. A great course! The only problem was the temperature, really hot.

The jersey worked very well! The fabric breathes with you and controls moisture and temperature to keep you performing at your best. Probably I would have had many more problems with the temperature, with another fabric.

I understood the importance of using the right wear. You can’t just have a tshirt and common shorts. A helmet is essential, as gloves, and elbow guards. A good pair of shoes is also recommended. And of course technical fabric clothing.

Few tips for cycling beginners: eat healthy food or you’ll never cover long distances; find the perfect bike for you, you don’t need to spend 20,000 dollars but you need a bike with three chain rings, which gives you the most range of gears; wear a bike jersey, typically made of synthetic materials that help wick away moisture from your body, and including a rear pocket to carry extra supplies while you ride; buy yourself some proper cycling shorts; set realistic goals and start slow; relax and enjoy the scenic routes.
